Mourning Chiefs lose another game
Football Betting Lines
12/20/2006 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The Chiefs wanted to win for the legendary Lamar Hunt this week, but in the end, it simply wasn't to be.
Hunt, the beloved owner and founder of the Chiefs, died Wednesday evening at the age of 74. He was credited with coining the name "Super Bowl" and was also recognized as one of the architects of the NFL/AFL merger.
When a giant of Hunt's stature passes away, his team obviously wants to reward his legacy with a victory, but in this case, a win in San Diego against the powerful Chargers was just too much to ask.
Chargers running back LaDainian Tomlinson made an example of another defense, as he rushed for 199 yards and two touchdowns in San Diego's 20-9 victory.
Also, the setback was another serious blow the Chiefs' playoff chances. Now, at 7-7, KC needs a minor miracle to get into the postseason.
But, leaving all that aside, the Chiefs were still proud of the way they fought in Sunday's game despite the recent heartbreak of losing the franchise's greatest supporter. And the players believe Hunt would have been just as proud.
"You know what?" Chiefs defensive end Jared Allen said. "I think he'd be proud of us either way. We played our butts off. He loved every player on this team, win or lose."
The Chiefs could have easily packed it in after Tomlinson rushed for 141 yards and both of his TDs in the first half, but the team never let the game get out of hand despite the double-digit loss.
One of the reasons KC was able to stay in this game was the play of the defense. While the Chiefs allowed Tomlinson to have a huge day, they were able to force quarterback Philip Rivers to have the worst game of his young career. Rivers had a career-low QB rating of 12.4 after completing 8-of-23 passes for just 97 yards and a pair of interceptions.
"We learned some things today about ourselves, and I think the thing I learned about this football team is that it just keeps fighting," said head coach Herman Edwards.
And that fighting attitude would've suited Hunt just fine.
KEEPING L.J. AT BAY
While L.T. was having a huge day for the Chargers, KC running back Larry Johnson was held in check.
Johnson was held to 84 yards on 19 carries, bringing to an end a stretch of four straight games with at least 100 yards on the ground. He was also kept out of the end zone for the third straight week.
The fourth-year running back out of Penn State is having an excellent season in his first year as the full-time starter. Johnson has 1,516 yards rushing and 15 touchdowns (13 rushing, 2 receiving).
Johnson is now second in the NFL in rushing yards to Tomlinson. The Chargers superstar leads the league with 1,626 yards, and Johnson is 110 yards behind.
MARTY MOURNS WITH KC
Marty Schottenheimer may have been coaching the Chargers this Sunday, but he couldn't help thinking about his former employer.
Schottenheimer is enjoying a career renaissance as San Diego's head coach, but it wasn't that long ago that he was roaming the sidelines for Hunt and the Chiefs.
Schottenheimer spent 10 of his 21 NFL seasons as an NFL head coach in Kansas City, coaching the club from 1989-1998. He has the second-longest tenure as Chiefs coach, falling behind only Hank Stram.
Naturally, spending such a large part of his career with the Chiefs, Schottenheimer developed a close relationship with the club's owner and had some emotional comments regarding the passing of Hunt.
"I loved him," Schottenheimer said of Hunt. "I'm not ashamed to say it. I'm proud to say it. I loved him."
RED TUESDAY
A memorial service for Hunt will take place on Tuesday afternoon, and the crowd will be dressed in a color well known to the Chiefs owner.
Kansas City mayor Kay Barnes has urged all citizens of Kansas City to wear red on Tuesday, including those people not attending the memorial at Community of Christ Auditorium in Independence, Missouri.
UP NEXT
The Chiefs will play their first home game since the passing of Hunt next Saturday night, as they host the rival Oakland Raiders.

In what should be an outstanding Saturday of March Madness betting action, the top four teams in the South and West Regions square off in what should be extremely close match-ups. Three of the four teams are coming off extremely close games on Thursday evening, only UCLA won semi comfortably over Pitt 64-55.
Ohio State is coming off their second game in a row where in all reality they should have lost. Of course that doesn’t matter now since the name of the game is “survive and advance” but as the tournament continues, they can’t afford to keep getting down to their opponents early. Kansas also avoided a scare by holding off a scrappy Southern Illinois squad. In the third thrilling game of the evening Memphis pulled off the minor upset (+3.5) despite being the higher seed to Texas A&M.
Although the spreads are fairly small for Saturday’s games, MySportsbook.com continue to bet against the underdogs. Despite OSU’s two scares, 86% of the “betting public” feels the Buckeyes (-1.5) have what it takes to make the Final Four. In fact, so much of the early money is on OSU that the line has already moved from -1 to -1.5. In the second game of the doubleheader, Kansas and their high-powered offense are 2 point favorites as they take on UCLA and their effective defense. About 63% of the early money thus far is once again backing the favorites. If those percentages stay that high, don’t be surprised if this line moves as well. If you like Kansas (-2) you might want to jump on it early.
Memphis vs. Ohio State
Both squads were involved in thrillers on Thursday evening and should come out fired up. OSU can ill afford to get behind early like they did versus their previous two opponents (Xavier, Tennessee). Greg Oden needs to stay out of foul trouble; the Buckeyes are a completely different team when he is on the court. Memphis definitely has the athleticism and length to match-up with OSU. Of Memphis’ five leading minute earners, the shortest of the bunch is 6’5”. Each team has a very effective defense; Memphis surrenders 62.3 PPG whereas the Buckeyes give up only 61 PPG. With those type of numbers, it isn’t surprising that Memphis covered the UNDER almost 69% of the time this season. As a favorite, OSU has covered the UNDER almost 66% of the time over the last three seasons. The major concern for Memphis which is magnifies this time of the year is their brutal foul shooting (62%). This season, OSU is 17-11 ATS versus teams with a winning record and 7-2 ATS in all tournament games. Memphis has been an extremely reliable cover in tournament play in recent years with a 23-8 ATS record over the last three seasons.
UCLA vs. Kansas
In the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader, UCLA will play in a role which they are very unfamiliar with that of the underdog. Only twice this season have they been getting points from the handicappers and both times they covered. Over the last three seasons UCLA is a reliable 23-7 ATS in this unfamiliar role. UCLA has not fared well against Big 12 opponents recently going 1-7 ATS since 1997. Giving up only 59.6 PPG, UCLA will definitely look to do what they do best: keep this game as low scoring as possible. Their defense has been especially tough during the tournament. UCLA opponents have been able to muster up only 48.7 PPG while shooting a combined 34.5% from the field. UCLA definitely has a challenge at hand with a Kansas team that is capable of putting points on the board in bunches. As a team, they average 79 PPG and shoot an impressive 49.6% from the field and 39.4% from beyond the arc. During the tournament Kansas has been “lights out” from the field having shot 56.2%.
